Author’s Profile

Dr. Vinay G. Vaidya

How could a grain of rice humble a king? Is there a secret hidden in a pencil that could win a Nobel Prize? How far has a human-made artificial object gone out in space? Do you know the language of DNA? Do you know who came up with Meru Prastara, which Western historians and scientists call Pascal’s triangle? Do you know that even equations can be mysterious enough to keep mathematicians busy for over 350 years? Do you know that sunflowers grow spirals inside them and there is a secret hidden in those spirals? How can anyone write complex equations out of nowhere and puzzle mathematicians for years over proving them? Dr. Vinay Vaidya has spent his whole life asking questions, and he still gets excited every time he finds an answer. That’s what research is all about. For him, there is nothing that brings more joy than seeing science make human lives better every time there is a discovery or invention.

Read more about Dr. VaidyaShow less

He started loving mathematics and science in 9th grade, and from that day on, he has not stopped loving math and science. He loved science so much that he became a scientist. He studied computer vision, which is the science of teaching computers to see, and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Washington in Seattle. Then he spent many years at Boeing, Siemens, and KPIT, researching new ideas, helping build new technologies, and guiding young engineers as they found their own way.

For him, one thing was sure: he loved all those years in technology, but teaching was a lot more fun. Some of his favorite students have been much younger. He taught science to children from 4 to 14 years old in Seattle and in Pune, and he has taught college students at the University of Washington, Symbiosis International University, and Savitribai Phule Pune University. Five of his students earned their doctorates under his guidance. Through all of it, he noticed something: whether a learner is four or forty-four, a good story opens the door faster than any textbook.

So that is what he writes. His books bring together folk tales, real science, and a little humor, and they share the lives of brilliant scientists who were once curious kids too. And why does he do it? Because he believes math and science are not just facts to memorize, but adventures waiting to be explored, and he hopes every reader, young or grown-up, will come along for the journey.
